Bachelor of Arts in Communications
Communications is the cornerstone of all that we are, do, and become. Whether in our jobs or in our personal lives, we rely on communications to effect individuals and society. Communications encompasses mass communications, public speaking, interpersonal communications, organizational, intercultural, nonverbal and strategic business communications. Students can explore areas of interest such as public relations, marketing, writing for media, journalism, editing and broadcasting. In addition to the required courses, students can choose a minor that works well with Business and English majors making this a very pragmatic major. A mandatory internship in the junior or senior year helps prepare students for a variety of careers through a practical application of skills and theories in the real world.
Majors in communications learn how to be more effective communicators and how to be critical analysts preparing them for career paths in most disciplines. The major consists of seven courses that are required: Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communications, Nonverbal Communications, Organizational Communications, Communication Theory and Research and Research in Communications. Along with required courses, students can explore their interests by selecting from at least four additional courses including: Introduction to Mass Communications, Introduction to Public Relations, Introduction to Marketing and Advertising, Writing for Media, Editing Theory and Processes, Journalism, Persuasion, Broadcasting, and Media/Communications Ethics.
Every student at Holy Cross needs to take a Division III elective. For those wanting to major in Communications, the Introduction to Psychology is required. Students must also select a Fine Arts core course and can choose from 2-D Art, Digital Imaging, Web Design or Film as Art and Communications. If interested in Broadcasting, an acting course may also prove to be beneficial. In addition to the Internship, each student will also complete the core requirements by going on a Global Immersion trip to Ghana, Peru, Mexico or India, become involved in service learning experiences, and complete their senior Capstone and eFolio.
